Additional Training Opportunities

For those who do not get selected for a team, you still have options to develop your skill.  There are stories of professional athletes who did not make a team in their early years, and became extremely motivated to prove their worth.  One such person is basketball legend, Michael Jordan.  ”I think that not making the Varsity team drove me to really work at my game, and also taught me that if you set goals, and work hard to achieve them-the hard work can pay off.”

Your options include:

1) Thunder Volleyball Academy 14U to 16U Clinics
2) Thunder Volleyball Academy Individual Coaching Sessions
3) Volleyball BC Christmas Development and Specialization Camps
4) All-Canadian Setters Camp

1) Thunder Volleyball Academy 14U to 16U Programs

Who It’s For:

This program is intended for athletes who are not selected to play on a team. The intent is to have these players continue to train in a competitive environment so that for the following season they will have the same opportunities available to them as the Club team players in terms of their skill development. This program recognizes the different rates of physical development and the different learning styles of individual athletes and offers the opportunity for all athletes to reach their true potential.

Format:

The programs are made up of eight 2 hour sessions running once a week, either on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings. Each session is divided into two parts, the first is instructional and the second is competition. At each session one or two specific skills are taught, and drills are run to help solidify those skills. The use of the Solo Spike Machine and the Dartfish Video System are used to help athletes break down each part of the skill being learned. Printed reports are available for review of their skill development.

In the second part, the group is divided into two teams.  These teams remain the same for the full 8 sessions. The teams compete and some instruction is given during competition. There are two coaches at each session.

Skills Covered:

Passing, serving, serve receive, spike, roll shot, tip, standing down ball, blocking, transition footwork and more.

Cost:

The cost is $195

Space:

If the numbers are higher than the space and time allotted, we will change the format of the Saturday program to 4 on 4 with three coaches and three mini courts instead of one large court and two coaches.

Volleyball BC hosts a series of development / athlete identification camps throughout the province to help male and female athletes improve their skills and team play. You will be provided with numerous ball contacts, physical testing, exposure to Team BC coaches and training with some of the top athletes in your region.  This year, for the Lower Mainland region, it will be held on December 19th and 20th.

4) All-Canadian Setters Camp

There is a setting camp held each year over on the Island that we recommend — the All-Canadian Setters Camp. Whether you are a setter or not, this is a good camp to attend. It is usually a two day camp and there is  accommodation available at Vancouver Island University. It may also be held in Kamloops this year. If you would like to be added to a contact list for when this seasons schedule and information is available, please send an email to Chris Densmore at islandvolleyball@shaw.ca.  Just put, “Add Me to Mailing List” in the subject box. We will also have links to registration forms from our website when they come available.

You may contact Gordon Tait at gordtait@telus.net if you have any questions about the camp.
