Academy Overview

Thunder Volleyball Academy Developmental Programs:

For the Jan/Feb program, priority registration is given to all of the athletes who attended the tryout sessions for Thunder Club and were not selected to play on a team. They will have until Dec 20th to register for these programs and after that the program is open to everyone.

The Programs that are run during the club season are primarily geared to the athletes that did not get selected to be on a team, or for those who wish to develop their individual  skills to a higher level. The program focuses on the basic skills of setting or overhead passing, bumping or forearm passing, serving, both the float and spin serve as well as serve receive and blocking. For the advanced athletes there is more emphasis on hitting and the nine phases of the approach.  The program is competitive based in a 2 on 2,  3 on 3 and 4 on 4 small court format, ensuring lots of contacts with the ball. Each session starts with a skill or two and drills to learn those skills. Then the competitive component is geared reinforces those skills. Also during the program there will be video training using the Dartfish Video System that will give the athletes instant feedback as they learn the various skills. They will also have the opportunity to practice using the Solo Spike machine, a tool that allows repetitive approach and hit movements. With the combination of the Darfish Video System and Solo Spike machine, most participants will become very proficient hitters.

U13/14 Program – Jan/Feb

The Programs that are run during the club season are primarily geared to the athletes that did not get selected to be on a team. The program is designed to retrain the participants in the basic skills of setting or overhead passing, bumping or forearm passing, serving, both the float and spin serve as well as serve receive and blocking. The program is competitive based in a 3 on 3 and 4 on 4 small court format, ensuring lots of contacts with the ball. Each session starts with a skill or two and drills to learn those skills. Then the competitive part is geared to scoring only with those skills. For example, if it were blocking we were teaching, points in the game are only scored if a block contact is made even if the ball is still in play after the block. Athletes really enjoy this competitive form of learning and with 4 coaches there is lots of opportunity to spend a little extra time on things that require extra time to learn.

The cost is $275 and includes some video feedback using the Dartfish video system as well as training with the Solo Spike machine to improve hitting skills.
