Teams Overview

The club volleyball season is January through April. Practices are weekday evenings. Tournaments are on weekends. The season culminates in the Provincial Championships which all teams participate in in mid to late April.

Players compete in divisions according to their birth year, not their grade. Volleyball players must attend the open tryouts for their own age division and gender if they want the opportunity to play for Thunder. Tryouts occur in late November and early December.

Thunder has both Competitive and High Performance (HP) club teams. Both Competitive and HP teams provide excellent training in the fundamentals of technical and tactical volleyball skills. Both Competitive and HP teams participate in volleyball tournaments organized by Volleyball BC. The difference is that the HP teams are more competitively focused. Competitive teams practice once or twice a week, and participate in at least 5 weekend tournaments. HP teams practice 2 or 3 times a week, and participate in at least 5 weekend tournaments several of which are out of town. Most HP teams also strive to place highly at the Provincial Championships and many go the National Championships. The club fees and travel costs are more expensive for players on a HP team.

Players must be regularly available for both weeknight practices and weekend tournaments. All schedule conflicts must be discussed with the club, and may or may not be acceptable.

Team fees for the 2012 club season vary depending on age group.  Thunder Volleyball is a non-profit organization. The fees cover: gym rentals, equipment (balls/nets/med kits), tournament fees (including Qualifiers and Provincial Championships), uniform top, Thunder gear, and Volleyball BC membership.  Fees do not include:  black uniform shorts or travel related costs (such as transportation (vehicle/van, ferries., etc.) hotel and food). All coaches and club admin are unpaid volunteers. See the Rosters and Fees page for the 2012 season fees.

There are a limited number of bursaries available for players who require financial assistance. Email the volleyball club for more information.
