The goal of Thunderbirds Elite Training is to provide expert position specific training for U16-U18 club players who are motivated to enhance their volleyball development potential not only for the current club season but their future as well.

Program Outline:

Players will sign up based on specific positions and receive advanced skill training in small groups, with a low coach-athlete ratio (apprx. 4-5)  to ensure focussed training and in-depth feedback opportunities. The program is structured to provide:

Knowledgeable Coaching:

Doug Reimer ( UBC Head coach), Jodi Zbyszewski, ( UBC assistant coach), Connor MacCuspie (UBC assistant coach), Jeff Ross ( Head coach, Douglas College), Liz Cordonier (former National Team player/UBC Alumni), Katie Crawford (UBC alumni), Alessandra Gentile (UBC alumni)

Additional coaches include Matt Kreuger (assistant coach UBC MVB) Beathen Thomas (UBC assistant)

The coaching staff has extensive youth, postsecondary, international coaching and playing experience and will be focussed on improving positional skill development.  For more on the UBC coaching staff

Additional current UBC players and alumni will also serve as assistant coaches and help teach through demonstration.

Individual Attention:

We will keep the group size small. The tentative maximum numbers are 6 Setters, 8-10 Outside hitters, 6 Middles & 4 Liberos.  There will be a minimum of 1 head coach per position at each session, supplemented by assistant coaches as needed.

Flexibility of Session dates:

Players will attend 7-8 sessions from January to May to allow individuals to schedule around other commitments and to get rest, and reduce coach-athlete ratios.

Additional training sessions  may be available at a reduced additional cost depending on space and time.  Additional information or sessions on sports psych, nutrition, physical training/rehab may be included.

A 48-hour cancellation notice is required by contacting Jodi Z. at

Most dates will have 2 up to a maximum of 3 positions training.  We will confirm which positions are training on which dates based on coach availability and numbers.

(This is the first time to run this program and coaching staff will assess if there needs to be changes in position composition or groupings.  We will communicate and update athletes and parents in regards to training dates and group composition.)

If you have a secondary position you would like to pursue in the sessions, it will be discussed and worked on in an individual basis. Additional or specific skill training requests should be noted at the time of registration.  (You may be asked to attend an evaluation session prior to confirming acceptance).   A waitlist of individuals will be developed for future opportunities or if space opens up in some sessions.

The cost for Thunderbird Elite Academy will be $500.   A tax receipt will be issued for a portion of the fees (approximately $250). All profits will be donated to UBC women’s volleyball scholarship funds.
